Count the cables currently on the post. Add one for whatever you fit next. Round up to the nearest size we make. That is your way count.

Empty holes cost you nothing electrically. But more ways means a physically larger terminal, and that is not free — it is the most common reason a terminal ends up going back. Size for what you will realistically run, not for the maximum you can imagine.

What a "way" actually is

A way is one cable hole. A 4-way terminal accepts four cables on one post, a 12-way accepts twelve. Each hole clamps independently with its own set screw, so cables of different gauges can share the same terminal as long as each one falls inside the rated range.

That independence is the whole point. The alternative — the thing multi-way terminals exist to replace — is stacking ring terminals on a stud, or worse, twisting several cables together under one clamp. Both approaches put the reliability of every accessory on your vehicle in series with one another.

The sizing method

  1. Count what is on the post now. On the positive side that is typically the main starter cable plus any accessory feeds. On the negative side, the main ground plus any added ground straps.
  2. Add one. Not three, not five — one. This is the honest allowance for the next thing you fit.
  3. Round up to the nearest size available. If you land on five, take the 6-way.
  4. Check it physically fits before you order. This step is not optional, and it is the one people skip.

Why "add one" and not "buy the biggest"

Empty holes are electrically harmless — an unused hole is just an unused hole. But a 12-way terminal occupies meaningfully more space than a 4-way, in every direction, and engine bays have been getting tighter for twenty years. Buying more capacity than you need is how a perfectly good terminal ends up not fitting under the hood. The cost of over-sizing is not money, it is clearance.

What each size is really for

4-wayA stock vehicle with one or two additions — a dash cam hardwire, a trickle charger lead, an auxiliary light bar. Also the sensible choice when space is tight and you genuinely do not need more.
6-wayA vehicle with a small cluster of accessories: aux lighting, a compressor, a radio feed, a charge lead. The size most people actually need and fewer people buy.
8-wayOverland and touring builds, modest car audio, dual-battery setups, work trucks with several powered accessories.
12-waySerious audio installs, competition builds, heavily equipped 4×4s, marine and RV systems where everything lands at one bank.

Count both posts separately

People size the positive terminal carefully and then forget the negative, which is how you end up with six feeds neatly landed and every one of them grounded through a single overloaded strap.

Current has to come back. Every accessory you add on the positive side needs a return path of equivalent capacity, and a ground connection is exactly as capable of being a bad joint as a positive one — arguably more so, because grounds are more often improvised. If you are adding four feeds, plan four returns.

Gauge and way count are separate decisions

A common muddle: assuming a 12-way must be for thicker cable than a 4-way. It is not. All our terminals accept the same range — 8 AWG up to 4/0. Way count is about how many cables; gauge is about how thick each one is.

So a compact build running two very heavy 4/0 runs may want a 4-way, while a build with eight thin accessory feeds may want an 8-way. Neither is "bigger" in the electrical sense.

When more ways is the wrong answer entirely

If you are landing more than a handful of accessory circuits, a multi-way terminal may not be what you want at all. At that point the cleaner architecture is one heavy feed from the battery to a fused distribution block, with the accessories fed from there.

The terminal then only needs to carry the main cable plus that one feed — so a 4-way is plenty, and every accessory gets individual fusing, which a battery terminal does not provide. We would rather you built it properly than bought a bigger terminal from us.

You now have your way count. The remaining question is whether it fits, and that depends on the height above your battery, the room around the post, and whether you can physically get a wrench in there to tighten it.
